In some residential areas, especially in larger cities, parking is only permitted with a resident parking permit. The parking permit can be valid either only at certain times or around the clock. The resident parking permit does not guarantee a fixed parking space.
This system gives residents priority over other drivers when it comes to allocating parking spaces.
Parking spaces for people with disabilities are excluded from this system.

Prerequisite
- You are registered in the residents' parking area and you actually live there.
- The vehicle is registered to you or
- You use the vehicle permanently.
If the vehicle is registered to another owner, you will needconfirmation from the owner that the vehicle has been given to you for permanent use.
Note: The local authorities may make the issue of the licence dependent on further requirements (e.g. main residence, lack of garage). You should therefore obtain information about the requirements from the relevant authority.
Procedure
Depending on the procedure of the responsible road traffic authority, you can apply for a resident parking permit in writing or electronically. Once the application has been received, the road traffic authority will check whether all the necessary documents and requirements have been met. A corresponding decision will then be issued.
The resident parking permit will be sent to you by post or digitally, depending on the local procedure. Ask the relevant road traffic authority which documents you need to submit to apply.

Resident parking card when moving
Vehicle and Resident's Parking Permit
When moving to another district (Stadtkreis or Landkreis) you have to apply for a new official license plate.
If you have a resident’s parking permit (Bewohnerparkausweis), then you should not forget when moving away from the residence parking area to inform this immediately to the municipality, which issued the permit, and to return the parking permit personally or by post.
Note: Inform yourself in good time, whether a resident’s parking permit is required in your new residential zone.

Parking garages
The city center offers enough parking space in six public parking garages, with the public parking spaces and the private spaces, which are also available especially on the weekends. Cell phone parking
A parking ticket can be conveniently purchased using a mobile phone. Before you can use mobile phone parking, you must register yourself and your vehicles with an operator. The preparatory work only takes a few minutes and is no more difficult than buying a train or plane ticket. The different tariffs and additional offers of the various providers are compared on the Internet. Then you can register with one of the providers. And mail arrives a few days later. This brings the sticker with the mobile parking logo. This logo is stuck to the windshield. And you can park with a mobile phone call. Shortly after the start of the parking process, an SMS arrives on your mobile phone. It says exactly when the parking process began, how long you can park and what parking costs. Before you turn the ignition key to drive away again, you call the same number again or answer the SMS to end the parking process. If you forget to do this, you will receive a reminder by SMS as soon as the maximum allowed parking time has expired. The service is especially interesting for people with reduced mobility. Or when it's slippery in winter. Or when it rains. You can save yourself the trip to the parking ticket machine when parking your mobile phone.
