Register your residence as your main residence

If you move into a new main residence, you must register in person with the registration office responsible for you at your new place of residence within two weeks of moving in.

The municipalities of Stuttgart, Freiburg im Breisgau, Oberndorf and Ladenburg are currently piloting electronic residence registration. You can also register your new main residence online here under certain conditions (see below).

The following applies as your main residence:

  • If you are married or living in a civil partnership: the home primarily used by both of you. This also applies if you are only living apart temporarily.
  • If you are married or in a civil partnership and live apart permanently: Your predominantly used home.
  • If you are a minor: the home mainly used by your parents or foster parents. If they live separately, the main residence is the home you mainly live in.
  • If you cannot clearly determine the home you mainly use: Your home in which you have the centre of your life.
  • If you have several homes in Germany, your main home is the home you primarily use.
