Report damaged road signs to the road construction authority. By doing so, you are actively contributing to road safety. Damaged, bent or missing road signs can have serious consequences for all road users.
Responsible authority
Depending on the class of road, different authorities are responsible for repairing road damage:
- on motorways: the south-west branch of Autobahn GmbH of the federal government
- on federal, state or district roads outside built-up areas: the respective district office or urban district
- on federal, state or district roads within built-up areas: depending on the number of inhabitants and the road concerned: For federal roads, the city is responsible if the population exceeds 80,000; for state and district roads, the city is responsible if the population exceeds 30,000, otherwise the district office is responsible.
- on all other roads within built-up areas, for example in residential and commercial areas, the local authority is responsible.

- Type of damage,
- The name of the road, e.g. A 81, B 10, Marktstraße,
- the section of road (e.g. between the A-Stadt and B-Dorf exits), stating the direction of travel and the exact location if possible
Deadlines
- Report damage to traffic signs: as soon as possible
- self-inflicted damage: report to the police immediately

Documents are only required if you have caused the damage yourself. Which documents are required must then be determined on a case-by-case basis.
