St. Michael’s Church

  • Michaelskirche
  • An der Stadtmauer

Constructed upon the site of a late Romanic Nikolaus chapel built between 1210 and 1220, stands the present St. Michael’s church. Though rebuilt several more times it was extended northwards in about 1621-2. Thirty-five previously plastered early-baroque panels were uncovered during the renovation between 1965 and 1967. Most of them were by the Heidenheim artist and Mayor Gottfried Enßlin (1600–1682).

Twenty-seven of the panels now decorate the church’s gallery, and eight are in the Hellenstein Castle Museum. In the sanctuary to the left, can be seen an oil painting depicting the adoration of Jesus by the three Magi. It probably originated in the studio of Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641), a pupil of Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). A few steps further you will find yourself in the Old Town again and in the back lane.
