From the “Im Flügel” street, a long flight of steps, the “Hermann-Mohn-Weg”, leads up to the castle. These steps lie tangential to the “Heidenschmiede”, the blacksmith’s shop. Hermann Mohn discovered a stockyard belonging to the Middle Stone Age in this rock alcove in 1930. A number of the 5,000 stone tools discovered during excavations, dating back almost 80,000 years, are on display in the Castle Hellenstein museum.
